At the grand wedding of a young couple the celebrations continue in the pit since the new husband is a miner. However, an accidental explosion seriously injures the man’s face. He hides his disfigured face behind a mask while his beautiful wife slowly becomes estranged, finding love in the arms of another man. One night, the lover dons a mask as a joke but they are suddenly surprised by the jealous husband. The two indistinguishable masked men clash in a furious duel. In this film (one of the last French silent movies ever made) by Charles Vanel, who became famous as an actor, an innovative montage technique, documentary authenticity and an atmosphere bordering on horror are combined in a distinctive manner.
